Masrour Barzani, prime minister of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), laid the ground at a ceremony for the building of a giant new industrial zone in Duhok province on Monday.

The project is expected to create scores of jobs, Kurdo Ihsan, head of Duhok’s investment directorate said.

“This project will serve the agriculture sector a lot where farmer’s produce will be marketed well. It will also create a large number of job opportunities for Duhok,” added Ihsan.

The government has dedicated 1,423 dunams of land, located five kilometers west of Duhok city in the district of Semel. It hopes to establish 175 factories and 129 warehouses, planned to be completed by UB Holding, a private company, in 5-10 years.

Speaking at the event, Barzani said, “the government has to implement the promises it has made and it has to work with the private sector to complete them. We have made some decisions to prioritize the private sector.”

“Our objective is to pave the way for people to rely on themselves to make an income, rather than merely depending on being employed by the government,” added the PM.

After the project is finished, the government says it will sell each square meter for $40. The project budget rests at around 70 billion Iraqi dinar ($58.6 million).

Hassan Mohammed is an investor who is trying to build a factory in the area. He needs four dunams of land to prepare his macaroni factory, and claims that his project will create 70 jobs.

“The dedicated place is very convenient. If service is provided, it will be very good,” said the investor.
