Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani expressed his concern regarding the spread of cholera on Sunday.

“I am worried about the spread of cholera in Sulaimani and Erbil, and I’m in contact with the health minister to take all necessary measures to control this epidemic,” Barzani tweeted, calling on all citizens to practice good hygiene and follow health guidance.

The Iraqi health ministry on Sunday confirmed 13 cases of cholera in the country – ten in Sulaimani, one in Kirkuk, and two in al-Muthanna province.

There has been a recent spike in hospitalization due to diarrhea in Sulaimani, and in Erbil and Duhok to a lesser extent.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by eating or drinking food or water that is contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholera, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Large-scale outbreaks of cholera were recorded in 2007, 2008, and 2012.
