Sending a letter,Kadhimi discusses border security, terrorism with Assad

Shkoi Kurdistan-

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Thursday sent a letter to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad about cooperating to combat terrorism along their shared border.

The letter was sent through Falih al-Fayyadh, chairman of the Popular Mobilization Committee (PMC), who was received by Assad in Damascus, according to Assad’s office.

The PMC is a board created by the Iraqi government to bring the Iranian-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) under central government control.

In the letter, Kadhimi discussed bilateral relations, latest developments in the region on political and security levels, as well as cooperation in the fight against “remaining terrorist outposts in the border region.”

Islamic State (ISIS) militants are present on the Syria-Iraq border. Iraqi forces have coordinated in the past with both the Syrian regime and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to curb the movement of ISIS fighters along the frontier.

Kadhimi’s office has not immediately commented on the letter.
