Getting shots increased to half a million in Kurdistan: health official

Shkoi kurdistan-

Nearly half a million doses of coronavirus vaccines have been administered in the Kurdistan Region, a health official told Rudaw on Saturday.

“So far, nearly 600,000 doses of vaccine have arrived in Kurdistan Region. Nearly 450,000 doses have been administered,” said Aram Rostam who supervises the purchase of vaccines for the health ministry.

The ministry’s vaccine rollout program has a registration platform open to the general public, but it prioritizes the elderly, people with chronic diseases, and health workers. They have also dedicated two days for specific sectors: public servants can get vaccinated on Saturdays and teachers on Tuesdays, as the new academic year approaches.

According to data from the Health World Organization (WHO), 2,102,550 people have been vaccinated in Iraq.

The Kurdistan Region recorded 1,052 new cases of the virus, 614 recoveries and 11 deaths on Saturday, bringing the total number of cases up to 251,078 and total deaths to 4,911.

Despite a surge in coronavirus cases with record high infection rates registered in the past couple of weeks, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has not imposed a lockdown. It has introduced preventative measures like compulsory mask wearing and banning events that draw crowds. The KRG’s crisis cell will meet on Sunday to review the current measures.

The surge in infections has contributed to an increased demand for vaccines, especially Pfizer.
