More than $2.5 million US dollars was stolen from a family in the provincial capital of Duhok, police said on Sunday. Two domestic workers are suspected of the crime.
On Friday night the police were notified about a robbery in Duhok city. “It was clear that the robbery was big,” Hemin Sleman, spokesperson for Duhok police said on Sunday in a press conference. “The amount [stolen] is $2,600,000, as well as four kilos of gold.”
The suspects remain at large and an investigation is ongoing. The police didn’t reveal any information about the suspects. “This is not the first time a robbery this large has taken place in Duhok province,” added Sleman.
Abdulkarim Sheikh Hamad, the head of Duhok’s social affairs directorate, told Shkoi Kurdistan that the two suspects are a married couple, who are domestic workers.
Shkoi Kurdistan has reached out to the family that was robbed, but they refused to comment.
According to Duhok’s Directorate of Labour, there are at least 2,350 domestic workers in the province.
